Your Romford

  • ✹ Project: Community engagement and visioning for Masterplanning of the Romford area

✦ Client: London Borough of Havering

✦ Role: Working as a visual and engagement designer, as a part of the make:good team

    ✦ Year: 2019

  • Your Romford was a public consultation that provided a platform for residents and businesses to share priorities for the upcoming Masterplan. make:good’s role, alongside architects and local government, was to engage the public in the dialogue and collect ideas and opinions.

I developed the project brand to be friendly and professional, whilst setting out a separate aesthetic from the Council’s ‘parent branding’. Professional materials and an identity that matched the values and heritage of the area was key in establishing trust with local residents and businesses. As the visual designer for the project, I used this identity across print materials, workshop materials, exhibition boards and the project website.

  • Alongside promotional print materials and digital communications, I also co- designed physical props and on-street presence for engagement events. These were designed to be curious, tactile and fun to encourage people to participate and share their concerns and ideas. I helped to set-up public events, as well as facilitate conversations with the public throughout.

  • Sustainability was one of the themes set out by the project, and so we were able to frame ideas and priorities for the future within this. Plans such as renaturalising the river, green pedestrianised spaces and reducing traffic were hugely popular.

The project was concluded with the publication of an open report, detailing the engagement process, its findings and its reach. This was a great opportunity to showcase our rich and varied data - both quantitative and qualitative - in colourful and engaging ways. I made use of a wide set of visual communication tools, including pictoral and numeric infographics, photographs and a strong, accessible layout.
